Kristen Ashburn has won the 2004 Canon Female Photojournalist Award, given out by the Association des Femmes Journalistes (AFJ). Ashburn, who is represented by Contact Press, will receive a 8,000 Euro stipend to help fund a one-year documentary project, which will be exhibited at the Visa pour l'Image photojournalism festival in 2005.
Ashburn won for her portfolio of images made during several trips to Africa. The bulk of her project shows how Zimbabwe, with 35 percent of its population infected by HIV, deals with the absence of parents, teachers, workers and food. Ashburn's work has appeared in U.S. News & World Report, Mother Jones, The New Yorker and D magazine, among others.
Last year's winner, Ami Vitale, will present her project on the war for Kashmir at the 16th annual Visa pour l'Image festival in Perpignan, France.
